Dear Friends,
It is with great pleasure that we present to you the fourth 2010 quarterly issue of the Jerusalem Life Science Bulletin, highlighting the latest achievements and news of Jerusalem's life science cluster.
|
I want to call your attention to two new interesting initiatives of Jerusalem-based academic institutions. The first is by the Pharmaceutical Engineering Department of the Jerusalem College of Engineering (JCE). In the past quarter, JCE launched, with the support of Teva Pharmaceuticals and the Foundation for Development and Progress, four new cutting-edge laboratories spanning 500 square meters built at a total cost of $3 million. The laboratories, equipped with the latest technology, specialize at pharmaceutical technology, chemical technology, analytical chemistry and biology. The college is now seeking collaborations with biotech companies that can benefit from these advanced laboratories and the expertise of the Department's leading scientists. In particular, the pharmaceutical and chemical industries can profit from transforming their production processes to "green", environmentally-friendly processes, and from scaling-up of green chemical processes while receiving analytical support from the laboratory staff. The Departments' staff members have a rich and diverse experience in the development, scaling-up and analysis of industrial chemical processes.
The second initiative is by Hadassah College, which has added a track in M.Sc. studies in Computer Science. This new track has a practical focus, and includes a specialization in "Computers in Medicine". Within the framework of studies, students will acquire targeted technological knowledge and special hardware and software tools that are most relevant to hospitals and the medical device industry. One of the goals of the program is to enhance professional ties with the local industry, thus projects in subjects such as programming, hardware, communications and medicine will be carried out at the College's state-of-art laboratories and in other laboratories in the Capital, such as at Hadassah University Hospital, and in cooperation with the biomed and hi-tech industries.
I would like to end with thanking the Jerusalem biotech companies that participated in the various activities we organized in the recent BioEurope meeting, which took place in November in Munich, Germany. Our session and booth, both of which highlighted the accomplishments of the Jerusalem bio-cluster, were a big success. We look forward to collaborating with you in future international life science conferences.
